Writing Prompt: Summer Serenity
A lot of times we think of summertime as a time for fun while splashing around in the pool, watching noisy fireworks from a distance, or attending crowded barbecues. But summertime can also be a time of tranquility and calm, especially if you’re out in nature or by natural bodies of water.
Select one of the photos in the photo strip below. Then write a summertime scene based on the photo you selected. Invoke the feeling and overall ambiance of serenity in what you decide to write. Try to write at least 500 words. For ideas on where and how to get started writing a scene based on this writing prompt, check out the tips below the photo strip.

Tips for today’s writing prompt:
After you select the photo from the photo strip above that you want to write about, ask yourself the following questions to get started:
- Has the main character you’re writing about ever been to this place before? Perhaps during a different season?
- Why is your main character visiting this place? To take a break from something or someone, or to go toward something or someone else?
- Is the main character alone? If not, who is near them?
- What expressions and mannerisms does the main character exhibit, that evoke serenity? Are they smiling, pensive, etc.?
- Is there a main character in the scene you’re writing at all? If not, what keywords and descriptions are you using that invoke serenity?
