Today’s Writing Prompt: Write About The Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program

A court ruling by a U.S. federal judge in Texas last Friday has left the lives of residents who have benefited from the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program more precarious. Today, take a moment to write about DACA. What are its pros and cons? And how would you change immigration policies and legislation like DACA? What are your thoughts and feelings on this recent ruling?

The DACA program has been controversial since its inception under President Barack Obama, who created it via executive action in 2012. The program currently protects an estimated 700,000 (or more) undocumented immigrants who arrived in the United States before age 16, immigrants also known as Dreamers (Source).

The Texas judge on Friday ruled that the program was unlawfully created by Obama, stating that Obama exceeded his executive authority. However, according to this article in The New York Times:

“But the judge wrote that current program recipients would not be immediately affected and that the federal government should not ‘take any immigration, deportation or criminal action’ against them that it ‘would not otherwise take.’

The Department of Homeland Security may continue to accept new applications but is temporarily prohibited from approving them, the judge ruled. Immigrants currently enrolled in the program, most of whom were brought to the United States as children, will for now retain the ability to stay and work in the country, though those protections could evaporate if the government is unable to rectify a series of legal shortcomings.”
