Today’s Writing Prompt: Write A Speech for Independence Day 2021
U.S. citizens and residents like me will celebrate their Independence Day this upcoming weekend, on Sunday, the fourth of July.
This year’s Independence Day is especially important in the U.S., in the wake of the January 6th Insurrection in the U.S. Capitol earlier this year, a highly contentious 2020 presidential election, a lingering pandemic, heightened tensions with police forces across states, climate change, disintegrating infrastructures, and divisive and volatile political tensions.
Now is the perfect time to reflect on what you want to focus on and harness for this year’s Independence Day, so that you can discuss your ideas and feelings with others. And if you’re outside the U.S., consider your own country’s independence day and what you’d like to address for it this year.

While it may seem like the first quote below couldn’t be further from reality right now, perhaps we can try to use it as a source of motivation, to remember what we have in common this year?
“There is no ‘Republican,’ no ‘Democrat,’ on the Fourth of July— all are Americans.”James G. Blaine, Oration on Independence Day
“May we think of freedom, not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right.”Peter Marshall
“America is a tune. It must be sung together.”Gerald Stanley Lee
“We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it.”William Faulkner
