When I Stepped Off The Plane, by K.E. Creighton

When I stepped off the plane into the windy passenger bridge, a rush of cold air sent a chill up my spine and made me pause. I also paused because the wheels of my luggage got stuck on the lip of the doorway to the plane. An elderly gentleman huffed, bent down, and reluctantly helped me unlodge the wheels so I wouldn’t hold up the line exiting the plane. And this prompted me to contemplate how incredible forced congeniality and generosity can be during the holiday season. I was, after all, a victim of it myself.

I didn’t want to be back home in Minnesota for the holidays this year. Or any other year, for that matter. I loved the bustle and glitz of Manhattan– the food, the art, the clothes– and already missed it. I would never miss plowing snow each morning or chopping wood each afternoon or nearly freezing to death as we trudged through the woods to find the perfect Christmas tree three days before Christmas Eve, with the rest of the entire town.

But my grandfather’s health was declining, my brother had just had his third child a few weeks ago, and my childhood best friend needed help with her maybe-failing four-person enterprise on Main Street. So, here I was, walking through the freezing passenger bridge toward the airport, praying I could find an espresso drink strong enough to warm my body and my mood.
