Completed Version of Today’s Writing Prompt

Stranger, by K.E. Creighton

When he reached into his pocket, I didn’t know what to expect. Here is this stranger in front of me telling me that he loves me and that he has something he’s been wanting to give me for a long time. But I have no idea who he is, or what he’s talking about. Do I?

When I woke up around ten minutes ago, I couldn’t recall what day it was or where I was. When I looked in the mirror, nothing. But somehow I didn’t feel panicked. So what now?

The stranger bends down on one knee in the center of the courtyard of my apartment. It is my apartment, right? It is where I live, isn’t it? Why else would I be here so early in the morning all alone? Well, until he rang the doorbell and told me to come down to the courtyard.

He holds out the ring he had taken out of his pocket. “It was my great-grandmother’s,” he says, “I know you’ve always loved this ring, so I went to get it this morning while you were sleeping.” Then, “After last night, I want to know if you want to be with me forever.”

Last night? What happened last night? I can’t even remember this man’s name. And I don’t recognize his face. What’s wrong with me? What happened?

After a few moments lapse and I don’t respond, he looks at me bewildered, then stands. He says, “I know I’ve been gone for a while, Lex, but last night you said—“

“I, I don’t remember anything,” I interject. But at least now I know my name.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt

This was a fun writing prompt to complete. When I first started writing it, I wasn’t sure where it was going to go. I wanted to keep it suspenseful and let readers decide what happened and what will happen. There are a lot of directions this can go in now.
