My Lucid Dream Turned Nightmare, by K.E. Creighton

As soon as my feet touched the ground, I was in a lucid dream; a dream that was both surreal and tangible.

When the static from communications with those on Earth faded for a moment, I began quietly humming my favorite track off The Dark Side of The Moon album to myself, fully taking in the solid yet ephemeral essence of my real life-long dream.

I could practically feel the dusty rock surface underneath my feet as if I was barefoot. I looked down and saw that the surface I was walking on didn’t look at all like the moon rocks we inspected in the lab. It was more alive, though much greyer. Walking around felt lighter in such thin air so close to the rest of the universe. Being that close to the rest of the universe was liberating.

When I looked up, I saw Earth dimly glowing in the direction I was walking. I was stunned. It was truly life-changing to see the Earth from that perspective. It was so much browner than what I remember seeing in the captured images from decades ago. There were so many shades of brown on it that I didn’t even know existed. So much brown. There weren’t spacious green land masses or bright blue oceans as the images had depicted. There were only vast desserts, loops of bleeding mud, and stretches of dead dirt— evaporating life.

It was then that my life-long dream of walking on the moon, now lucid, became a real-life nightmare about living on Earth.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt

At first, I thought this writing prompt would be fun to write. Who hasn’t or doesn’t want to daydream about walking on the moon? How cool would that be?! But then I realized that someone hasn’t walked on the moon in 50 years, since 1972. And our planet Earth has changed significantly since then, so looking back at it would look a lot different now. If you take a look at images of Earth from recent years and compare them to images taken decades ago, you can see the difference. It’s striking. There is so much brown on Earth’s surface now. And the blue of Earth’s oceans looks dingy now and isn’t nearly as bright.
