Today’s Writing Prompt: This wasn’t supposed to happen.
Today, start whatever you write with this sentence: This wasn’t supposed to happen. Write from the third-person point of view. And if you’re not sure what to write about at first, consider what could happen that might make you feel embarrassed, mortified, or terrified. Use things or social situations you’re typically anxious or paranoid about to your advantage today and write about them.

This wasn’t supposed to happen., by K.E. Creighton
This wasn’t supposed to happen. Dr. Patel stepped back from the electron microscope in astonishment, trying to process what she just saw. How was it possible? She’d never seen envelope proteins interact with RNA like that. And now she had to think fast, to figure out what to do next. The survival of the human species depended on it.
Based on what she saw, the virus was now mutating at an exponential level. No. This couldn’t be happening, she thought. It’s just sleep deprivation. She’d been up for days, so she must be seeing things.
Dr. Patel rubbed her eyes and looked through the microscope again. And her chest suddenly felt tight, as her biggest fears were realized. This was really happening. A weaponized virus now exists.
Now what?
The team she was responsible for was supposed to have stopped the virus from spreading across the globe. That’s what they told major press outlets around the world last week, at least. But now it was acting as if it was an activated biological weapon. And she had no idea who did this or how or when or why. She just knew there was no one she could fully trust anymore, and that she had to work fast.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt
I don’t know about you, but potentially weaponized viruses and or biological warfare freaks me out and makes me paranoid. Why? Because not enough people in the world will be able to do much about biological weapons until scientists and doctors and other professionals help them, which concentrates a lot of power in the hands of a few people or small groups of people. That’s why I chose to write about what I did for this prompt. My knowledge of this subject is very limited, however, so apologies for any inaccuracies that might be present in what I wrote.
