Completed Version of Today’s Writing Prompt

They were destined for riches. , by K.E. Creighton

They were destined for riches. But, as everyone knows, riches tend to come with turmoil and loneliness and more darker than brighter days on the horizon. Whether riches are inherited or stolen, no one humane truly wants riches in the end, especially not this family. Because true riches can not be honestly earned. And honor and dignity were once their legacy. Until…

Thomas was the older, taller, dark-haired brother. He was the oldest of this next generation to inherit their family’s riches— riches that were passed down for millennia and clearly cursed. Although no one in his house wanted to believe it. Still, the fact was no one in his family lived longer than five years after they came upon their inheritance, which is why there was still so much of it left after four hundred years. Or so they were told.

Timothy, Thomas’s younger brother, who was shorter and more impatient, did not believe in tall tales and family legends, however. Or decades of evidence. He would be the one to secure their family’s riches once and for all, he decided.

So one day, Timothy decided to go to the vault that was deep within the cave on the edge of their family’s property to secure what he believed was rightfully his. But when he reached the entrance to the cave, he collapsed suddenly and violently, as if hurricane winds had knocked him down, and became mute until he died a decade later in his sleep.

When his brother Thomas found Timothy the next morning lying on the ground, he didn’t dare enter the threshold of the cave. Neither of them did from that day forward. And so their destiny of riches, although tangible and real, also became a myth.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt

I’ve never written anything like I did above before, which is why I’ve grown to enjoy completing these writing prompts each day. I produce drafts of writing each morning that I might revisit or revise (or more fiercely edit) someday. But on the day I write them, they simply let me awaken my more creative impulses for the day.
