The Merry-Go-Round by K.E. Creighton
At dusk, the merry-go-round emits a different energy. I swear they turn the music box tunes in the background up a little louder, and make it spin a bit faster.
He told me to meet him here, at the merry-go-round in the middle of the park, just after sunset, over the phone at lunch. So, here I am, watching it go round and round while I wait.
We’ve always waited for each other here, at the short aluminum gate a few paces left of the entrance, on really bad days, for nearly a decade now. Because it’s impossible to be sad when you’re spinning around in circles, is what he told me the first time he brought me here after I had bombed an important chemistry exam. That seems like a lifetime ago now.
Well, we did always come here, until I broke the tradition when I took off a week ago to be alone with my grief for a little while, knowing that he wouldn’t follow me and that I wouldn’t need to tell him where I was going. Not because he didn’t love me, but because he did, and understood me and how I process the world better than anyone else.
Once he arrives at the merry-go-round, he doesn’t say a word. He just takes my hand and rubs the ring he gave me two years ago as we walk through the gate together. We take our usual seat on an ornate chariot bench in between a tiger and two unicorns. I lean on him for the first time in a while, and he lets me.
