“Can you believe it? They’ve been together for nearly fifteen years. And then one day he just vanishes, without a trace, leaving her with two pre-teens to look after. What a nightmare, and such an incredibly sad situation, too, of course,” says a hushed voice.
Expensive cheeses on fancy plates circle around the room and everyone politely partakes and smiles.
“I’m not so sure he vanished willingly. I heard from the sheriff’s neighbor yesterday morning that they have reason to believe that the husband was involved in some type of suspicious activity; drugs or something,” responds a voice that’s barely above a whisper.
Ice clinks in a glass on the other side of the room as someone refreshes their drink.
A louder voice chimes in, “It definitely wasn’t drugs. It has to be related to all those guns he kept in his tool shed. I heard from the supermarket clerk on Thursday that the guns are missing, too. And that they were likely black market guns.”
“No way. He didn’t even seem like someone who knew how to shoot a gun,” says the hushed voice. “Or someone who would abandon his family in the middle of the night without so much as a grunt or goodbye, for that matter,” added the whispery voice.
Someone increases the volume of the classical jazz playing in the background ever so slightly.
The louder voice says, “Look at her smiling and enjoying the party. Maybe she had something to do with it. She doesn’t look that distraught.”
Just then, the wife of the missing husband looks over and winks.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt
I purposefully didn’t use names or genders for those who were speaking in what I wrote above. It may or may not change how you read it and what you take away from it, but it was intentional nonetheless.
