My Completed Version of Today’s Writing Prompt

Nothing is Free by K.E. Creighton

As soon as they went over the cost of my care and handed me a bill, I was flabbergasted. I was always so busy working at the restaurant and running groceries and babysitting in my spare time that somehow, I forgot to think about acquiring health insurance. Especially since I’m only twenty-three. But alas, my regular thirteen and fourteen-hour work days caught up to me. And here I am, in the emergency room.

The short blonde woman who handed me the bill must see the shock on my face but doesn’t really react. At least, not sympathetically. She keeps a neutral expression and says, “Sorry, dear. Without health insurance, this is the flat cost for what we helped you with today.”

“But… I can’t pay for this. I only had a simple test. And you only ended up giving me…” I looked down at the sheet again, “…ibuprofen. That doesn’t cost fifty dollars! It costs less at the drugstore around the corner.”

The woman now hardens her expression and says, “Well, nothing is free. Not even your health. But the good news is now you can plan for next time.”
