Today’s Writing Prompt: Laid Off

Imagine a scene in which someone has just been laid off from their job, but they’re not exactly depressed about it. When you write this scene, make it an empowering moment, even if it’s a clumsy one. For ideas of what to write about for this prompt, think about movies like Jerry Maguire or Office Space.

My Completed Version of Today’s Writing Prompt

You can’t fire me. I quit. by K.E. Creighton

It was immature, but I said it anyway as I walked out of his office, or yelled it. I should clarify.

“You can’t fire me. I quit!”

I held my head high, tripped over the edge of my cubicle, gathered my purse and coat, dropped my purse and coat on the floor, then pushed my chair up to the desk.

Everyone was pretending not to notice. They knew one of them was next.

Before I reached the elevator, I heard Frankie say, “I’m with her. I’m not waiting around to be canned.”

I turned around and saw Kyle and Paula stand up and gather their things as well.

We all stood on the elevator looking out at our old cubicles underneath the garish outdated fluorescent lighting, and our former boss’s pale face, as the door closed.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt

Sure, the scene I wrote above might seem ridiculous. But impossible, no. Especially not in today’s working world.
