You know what they say about public speaking, right? About most people fearing it more than death? Well, today it’s time to face this fear by writing about it. Just speak.

Today’s Writing Prompt: Just Speak

Pretend you are in front of a crowd speaking. What are you saying? To whom are you speaking?

For today’s writing prompt, write the introduction of a speech you’d like to give. It can be about anything you’d like for any audience you’d like.

Be Careful When Judging a Fish, by K.E. Creighton

Today, you’ll hear me repeat a single phrase over and over again: “We are only as strong as our weakest link.” But that same phrase will also seem odd to you by the time I’m finished speaking today because there are, in fact, no weak links in our society.

That’s right. There are no weak links in our society.

You might be asking yourself, “well, what about lazy people?” or, “what about those with mental or physical handicaps?” or, “what about those who aren’t that smart?” etcetera. You, of course, are highly unlikely to ask these questions aloud to your neighbors. So, I’ll go ahead and answer those questions: yes, even those individuals should not be perceived as weak, or as a burden, not in the slightest.

If it weren’t for the current power dynamics, and what fuels those power dynamics, in our society, each individual would be able to reach their fullest potential. And they would be able to do this regardless of their individual gifts.

Before I get into the data and details of my claim, I want you to remember one of my favorite quotes for the remainder of the time I’m speaking today: “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
