Life Gamble by K.E. Creighton
As she walked across the sticky retro carpet in the main lobby, the carnivalesque sounds coming from the slot machines overwhelmed her, along with the stale odor of cigarettes. She had never been to this casino before, but she knew the layout well. Its pungency was familiar. And she was ashamed to admit how much she liked it.
Just an hour ago at the Golden Palace Motel, less than a mile away, she had gone over the plan one last time with her sister’s captors. All she had to do was distract everyone inside, win as much as she could under the radar, and then they would let her sister go.
Everyone believed she was lucky, which is why she was selected for the job. But it was one thing to be a gambling addict, rolling the dice with your real career and mortgage on the line. And quite another to potentially be gambling a life away – a life you’re attached to, whether you liked it or not.
Once they saw firsthand what she was really capable of, they would never let her go. Luck had nothing to do with it–it was all orchestrated mathematical chance. And she was excellent at probabilities and statistics, usually. But today she was distracted.
