My Completed Version of Today’s Writing Prompt

Traveling Theater by K.E. Creighton

It had cropped up in many towns, and now it was going to be in ours, too. It would be here, in our town square – which isn’t really much of a square but more like a lopsided rectangle with haystacks in the middle – just before nightfall, according to the messenger at the farmer’s market.

Who would have ever imagined? A traveling theater in our small, almost nonexistent town of a few hundred in the southwest? It seems like we’re traveling back in time to when Shakespeare was alive. But somehow, we’re managing to travel into the future, yet not moving our feet at all.

We don’t see much theater around here, or ever, since the nearest theater is hundreds of miles away, so it’s bound to shake things up in one way or another. Martha says she will make pies for the crowd. And Andy says he might join their act if they’ll have him. While Jimmy and Sue and their kids already have their coordinating outfits picked out like they’re going to church.

It’s exciting. But before we get too carried away – which is hard, I’ll admit – it’s important to ask: What are they going to want in return for entertaining us? It’s almost like that time a group of men in suits came to tell us they had figured out how to heal our crops, and they all died out two years later. Everyone is still saddled by that debt.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt

I think it would be interesting to go back to an era when there were traveling theater companies. What would it be like if they existed now and traveled to small towns around the world, or at least in a few states? I wonder how it would change our culture and understanding of one another…
