Finders Keepers, by K.E. Creighton

Frank dusted off an old box of books in the basement of Barton’s Books, the new used bookstore he started working at last week for his first part-time job. He was only allowed to work on the weekends, otherwise, his loving yet overprotective mother wouldn’t agree to allow him to work at all. But he was elated to be among books, nonetheless.

Frank didn’t necessarily relish the idea of being relegated to the basement by himself. He did, however, relish digging through old unmarked boxes of books undisturbed, even if his sinuses didn’t.

The stack of boxes Frank was sorting through now had been dropped off anonymously earlier this week. And he had been tasked with sorting through them by Mr. Barton himself. The proprietor wanted Frank to sort them all by genre and binding. Simple enough.

Mr. Barton had complained how there probably wasn’t anything in the boxes he could sell anyhow and had crinkled his nose in disgust at their musty smell after introducing Frank to their whereabouts in the damp corner of the basement a few minutes ago.

When Frank opened the box now in front of him, however, he never imagined what he would discover. It was a first edition copy of a rare book that everyone had been searching for, for decades, according to news articles he came across last week.

Frank had always been a moral and dutiful student and son and friend until this moment. Even so and for whatever reason, all that crossed his mind at that very moment as he felt the soft leather of the rare book in his hands was the mantra, “finders keepers.”
