Today’s post, During the rainstorm…, is based on a writing prompt I shared in the Daily Drafts & Dialogues Writers group. Hopefully, it helps spur your creativity today too.

Writing Prompt: During the rainstorm…
Today, start writing by completing the sentence: “During the rainstorm…” Today’s writing prompt is about setting the scene and creating an atmosphere. Try to use your imagination while also being practical when completing this prompt.
During the Rainstorm by K.E. Creighton
During the rainstorm, the power went out, and we pretended like we were on a deserted island. In a vast and sunny seascape. It was just the three of us, in the darkened jungle of our living room without a life raft. Without a phone. Without civilization. Only each other. On a blank life-sized canvas.
For hours that seemed like days, we were pirates and treasure hunters and map creators and explorers and ancient conquerers together. Full of tropical hues. And a delicate brush of hubris. We laughed and twirled, splashed paint around carelessly, and sang impromtu songs of victory. We sketched and planted a flag for Paradise. Our perfect corner of the world in bright blue. Envisioned into being.
But imagining is an exhausting business. The illuminated vibrant colors fade and crack. And eyes grow too weak to see. Eventually, I fell fast asleep. With strong arms and soft hands wrapped around me. A makeshift paper hat on my head. A small broom-handle sword in the crook of my arm. Safe. And sound. Peacefully dreaming in a mountain of pillows and pastels.
But when I woke up, the harsh artificial lights were on again, and you both were gone. And so was my panoramic fantasy.
