Completed Version of Today’s Writing Prompt

Crypto Crash, by K.E. Creighton

Dean couldn’t believe it. His crypto was frozen. He couldn’t access it. They said they placed the holds on it to avoid a crash, but the exchange entity holding his funds was declaring bankruptcy now. So what was that supposed to mean? Would it mean that they’re going to get bailed out in one way or the other, like the other times, while he’s left with what exactly? It seems like it was all orchestrated ahead of time somehow, legally. But he doesn’t have the time to look into all of that. He has a day-to-day life to live as a shop owner. And either way, all that mattered at the moment was that he couldn’t pay his mortgage due tomorrow. Along with his daughter’s tuition. And the electricity bill at the shop.

All the headlines the past few days discussed the crypto crash and how bad it is for the economy… or maybe it’s not? It doesn’t seem to exist or touch most people. There doesn’t seem to be a real consensus. But no one seems to care about people like Dean and their situations as living breathing humans who are victims of theft. Or that it shouldn’t be legal to withhold a person’s funds regardless of the reasons or the economy or… especially if those persons have no recourse– no legal recourse, no financial recourse, no dignified recourse whatsoever. And the cruel irony of it all is that in order to further validate options of recourse for this crypto crash people like Dean have to keep on validating the platforms that invalidate people like him and their entire livelihoods. Otherwise, no one will ever pay attention to any of it. If they ever decide to pay attention to it.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt

I’ll confess there’s still a lot I need to learn about cryptocurrency and how it’s exchanged. Once I do, there are many ways I can improve what I wrote above and how it affects the character, Dean.
