Today’s writing prompt is based on a real event. Last weekend over 150 people died in a crowd surge in Itaewon, in Seoul, South Korea during Halloween celebrations. And I can’t stop thinking about it, especially after reading about some of the survivors’ injuries and accounts of what happened. I am hoping today’s writing prompt will bring awareness and empathy to such a senseless and avoidable tragedy. Keep reading to see today’s full writing prompt and my completed version of it.

Today’s Writing Prompt: Crowd Crush

Today, write about a person who gets caught in a dangerous crowd surge using the first-person perspective.

Completed Version of Today’s Writing Prompt

Crowd Crush, by K.E. Creighton

Elbows around me were clubbing the top of my head. They were attached to arms attached to hands attempting to take selfies in the dense crowd trapped in between tall stone buildings. It truly was an odd feeling to be completely surrounded by such a large group of people, so incredibly close that you can smell and feel your own body odor and perspiration mixed with theirs— yet still, feel as if you didn’t exist to them or anyone else in the world at all, as if you were all just a pile of limbs and torsos.

When there was a gentle sway in the tight crowd, it felt comforting at first, as if we were all riding a rollercoaster in the clouds together. But the sway that followed that one came with the violent force of a tsunami, ultimately destroying bodies in its wake.

I could hear the crack of ribs, my ribs, and some of those around me, along with pleas for help. But the pleas turned into murmurs as the air around us disappeared. As flailing and contorted limbs around me became limp and purple, I lost all feeling in my own legs, too. I was starting to lose consciousness underneath a shoulder blade and kneecap when a stranger grabbed my arm and pulled me up onto the hood of a van. And it was only then that I recognized my foot had been hovering in the air over a lifeless neck on the ground. It hurt to breathe, to gulp up the plentiful air around me then, as those below were still seeking it to no avail.
