Static Over the Bermuda Triangle, by K.E. Creighton

They were less than a few miles outside of the Bermuda Triangle when her co-pilot fell unconscious. She began to panic. She was trained to remain calm under a myriad of terrifying circumstances. But her throat was starting to close up in this real-life, non-simulated scenario.

For now, she was fine without Jack’s help, but she didn’t know what happened to him or why he’d passed out. One second he was talking about his daughter’s swim meet, and the next, he was just… out. And no longer responding to her pleas and curses. She needed him to wake up or find medical care as soon as possible.

When she attempted to reach someone over the radio, there was nothing but dense static. Then, suddenly, heavy rain started to fall and weigh down the plane, preoccupying her attention and bringing back the steady rhythm of her breathing.

A woman’s voice broke through the static over the radio, “We have taken in water, my navigator is badly hurt … we are in need of medical care and must have help. We can’t hold on much longer.”

That’s when she nearly stopped breathing. She’d know that voice anywhere. It was the voice that pushed her to learn to fly when she was a little girl. Though, the first time she’d ever heard it, it had been scratchy. Because she had heard it from an old recording.

The voice she heard belonged to Amelia Earhart. And it lingered in the air around her right now. Unmistakable and tangible.

Then, just like that, the sky was clear blue again. Jack sat up. And the static faded.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt

The tales and myths of what’s happened in and around the Bermuda Triangle are fascinating. And so are all the stories centered around Amelia Earhart’s disappearance. If this topic interests you, you’ll want to read more about it. Start with these two articles: Dozens heard Amelia Earhart’s final, chilling pleas for help, researchers say and Amelia Earhart’s last days: New distress call analysis provides intimate portrait of her final week.
