The Intrusion at the Library, by K.E. Creighton
When the automatic double doors open, I’m greeted by the smooth, deep tones of a cello. And notes of cinnamon. I see a small crowd congregating in the space next to the large front window where I usually read every Friday afternoon. At first, I’m annoyed at this intrusion into my routine, but then I observe the crowd more carefully.
The crowd consists of listeners of all ages and sizes. Some are standing. Some are sitting. All are peaceful and listening. There are three children on the floor thumbing through picture books and laughing with their parents close by. A middle-aged man with a thick red scarf wrapped around his neck sits still on a small wooden chair closer to the cellist. A teenage boy with a stack of books cradled underneath an arm leans on the endcap of a row of bookshelves beside the man sitting. And an elderly woman with a pink blanket draped over her lap nods off in her wheelchair as the music continues.
When I turn to my side, Sue (the librarian who works on Fridays) brings me a chair. I sit without protest and join the harmonious crowd. I sit and listen until the music gradually ebbs from the public space and time I typically covet as my own.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt
I’ve read a few books that take place in libraries this past year, so I wrote a short scene in a library for this prompt. I was also visiting my own local library recently during the holidays when they had a cellist playing seasonal songs. It was beautiful and drew quite a diverse crowd.
