At the restaurant… by K.E. Creighton
At the restaurant, I can’t get his attention. Because every few minutes, a scantily clad diver appears on top of the cliff next to the waterfall before jumping off it and making a splash in the chlorine-treated pool below.
And he is mesmerized by the show like a small child would be. Plus, it’s nearly impossible to talk over the arcade noises and children shrieking in the near background.
We’re supposed to be having our annual chat about what we want to do next and our budget, especially important since the recent diagnosis. But he had insisted we come here for the grand re-opening after the renovations, no matter what, instead of the quiet bistro we usually go to downtown. So here we are, sharing sopapillas, surrounded by bright tropical murals with toucans, pretending…
Pretending what? I’m not so sure anymore. It seems real somehow. There’s that long-lost gleam in his eye, and he’s genuinely happy. So I just let him soak it in a little while longer and ask for another round of margaritas and chips. Everything else can wait.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt
What I wrote above is inspired by a real place in the Denver Metro area in Colorado called Casa Bonita. They’re renovating it now. But they used to have cliff divers and an arcade there, and I’m assuming they still will after their upcoming reopening because of how popular it was.
