Completed Version of Today’s Writing Prompt
As we danced…, by K.E. Creighton
As we danced, I started to feel the growing unevenness in the tempo between us in a way I never had before. We always had such a steady cadence, always in step with each other. Out there in the bright lights and in day-to-day life. But as we glided across the open ballroom floor earlier tonight, his arms were stiff and he was actively keeping my core distant from his, disrupting our rhythm. This competition was distracting him in a way that past competitions never did. And I knew the impending reason why which was cancerous.
No one ever believed I wasn’t the one who wanted to compete in ballroom dancing because I’d always loved it, dancing– hence why I opened my own ballroom studio before I turned twenty. But he was turning into the fiercely competitive one now, not me. I loved dancing for its meditative qualities and dancing for the sake of dancing. I loved dancing because my brain moved my feet and legs without thinking. Well, I did, until he started loving the precision of our steps and the forced grace of our stances more. He desperately needs something he can control now, as my body is failing.
Tonight, I could feel the resentment he held in his tight body as we worked across the floor. Our technical form was immaculate according to the judges. But our desire and joy and ability to entertain others were lacking. And I agreed. We were too inflexible and rigid now, no longer limber. Our knees and elbows barely bended. Sure, I knew why. He wouldn’t give in to and accept our new reality. I wish he would. And I wish we could go back to the days when we giggled and kissed as we danced to the beat of our own music, instead of counting steps and perfecting our time. Especially since we don’t have much time left now.

Notes on Completing this Writing Prompt
Completing this writing prompt was interesting because there are so many phrases and terms and metaphors that can be used when it comes to writing about dancing. Dancing can be romantic, but it can also be awkward or force you to realize how distant you are from another person. And I don’t know about you, but I like writing prompts that have a multitude of potential outcomes.
