Art Attack, by K.E. Creighton

When James pulled up to the meat packaging plant for his shift, he saw the bold graffiti letters on the side of the building, nearly indecipherable. Their primary colors were loud, organic, unavoidable, and outlined in navy blue. Although he knew he’d have to work for hours to scrub them off, James found them, the letters, mesmerizing and beautiful. Hopeful. Especially when juxtaposed with the darkness of the place they covered.

The bright graffiti letters spelled out, “Peace is love. Love is food. Food is life. Life is not death.”

Surrounding the bold letters were bright vegetables, clouds, a large sun, and smiling pigs.

James hadn’t eaten meat in years, likely because of this very place, now adorned with bright graffiti. It was ironic, he knew, since he had worked in this place for over a decade. But this place with a strong stench, cold floors, and dim lighting, was the only place to work in town—that is, if you didn’t run a farm for a big company that was bound to rob you and your family blind.

This graffiti, however, this attack of art, was a literal sign that James was not alone in this town after all. Or maybe even in this place of work. So to him, it was a cheerful sign. Even if he was to wash it all away before the day was over.
