Today’s Writing Prompt: A Moment of Silence

Write a scene in which a group of people is taking a moment of silence. You can write in the first-person or third-person. But make sure you capture the mood of the scene and consider what or whom everyone is taking a moment of silence for before you begin writing. And consider where the moment of silence is taking place.

Everest Base Camp, by K.E. Creighton

I look up and see nothing but steep rocks covered in snow. But it’s surprisingly warm here, much warmer than I thought it would be. The sun is out and bright. And there are only two or three large clouds in the sky, surrounding the apex of the mountain directly in front of me. It’s the tail-end of spring, but the start of a new journey in my life. A journey I won’t ever forget, but desperately hope I’ll be able to remember.

Today is the day we’re going to climb Everest. We’re a small group and I’m the least experienced of us, but we’re finally here at one of the base camps and it all seems so surreal. I inhale deeply to regain control over my breathing. And I start reciting the list of gear I packed in my head to make sure I didn’t leave anything behind. Then after a few moments, I swear I can feel my adrenaline levels dissipate throughout my whole body.

Our group leader huddles us together and says, “Today we’re going to climb to new heights, together. We’re aware of all the risks. And we already know all the tricks to stay focused, stick together, and survive. So, I won’t give you an unnecessary pep talk or reminders. But now that we’re here, I would like for all of us to take a moment of silence, as we look up at the mountain, to show respect to the mountain and all the climbers who have come before us, especially those who didn’t make it to the other side.”
