Life In The Mist, by K.E. Creighton
The fickle bursts of wind keep the black iron gates swinging routinely, forcing them against the stone archways, welcoming visitors from all walks of life. And death. And breath. With a clash. At dawn.
The weathered tombstones are scattered like crooked teeth across the uneven mouth of the graveyard. Some are marked and some are not. With faded epithets and honors and forms. Some with fresh flowers left. Some bare and forlorn.
The crows arrive here at the peak of mourning. When the shrouds are draped in and over the ground. And the weary are at rest. Among the hazy clouds and in between intimate crowds. Where the sorrow is thick. And remorse is useless. Like the now windless.
When the last griever leaves the graves, only the sounds of lingering sobs and laments stay. So palpable. So subtle. They remain entombed amidst the mist. Some take them for ghosts and spooks. But no. This is the only place for them to survive. To exist.
